Evolution 15 K

With Evolution 15K we’re taking another step forward – for our customers, colleagues and the environment. Our new tanker has been designed to provide the highest levels of sustainability, efficiency and safety as well as excellent working conditions.

Evolution 15k is the next step on our pathway to zero emissions

This symbol stands for Sirius’s commitment and to the voyage we have ahead of us. Our long-term goal is ZERO emissions. The symbol shows our commitment to achieving this goal, so whenever you see it on one of our ships, you know why it’s there. It’s our pathway to zero emissions.

EVOLUTION is the development programme in which Sirius incorporates lessons learned from all of our vessels and crews into the design of next generation tankers. Our fund of more than 25 years’ experience has resulted in a truly efficient vessel – efficiency that our customers can exploit to the full.

With Methanol as fuel onboard the vessel is able to comply beyond the European Green Deal packade: FIT FOR 55 and its FuelEU Maritime initiative. With future supply of E-Methanol the vessel is able to reach ZERO Co2 and almost non-existent NOx emissions. This is Sirius PATHWAY TO ZERO.

Marineline 784 – Future proof cargo tank coating

To prepare best possible for a wide range of future cargo possibilities the Evolution series vessels will have MarineLINE© coated cargo tanks. This will enable vessels to carry ambient tempered or heated cargoes of DPP, CPP, Base oils, Methanol or easy chemical grades, as well as most alternative bio fuel feedstock grades such as vegetable oils, animal fat, fatty acids, recycled liquid waste products etc. It is also of great importance to have efficient cleaning operations between different grade cargoes, which MarineLINE© coated tanks will facilitate.

24/7

All year round in any weather and every port. Whether our crew is on watch or off, they are still on board. The ship will be a safe workplace, and a comfortable home when the crew is off duty. Because our crew is our greatest asset, we reduce their workload and stress by building spacious accommodation, a gym, sauna, sheltered moorings, protected mooring positions, enclosed deck trunk and remotely operated cranes, and making sure everything on board is easy to maintain.

Crew comfort/social

Special attention was given to crew well-being and comfort. Because the crew is on board 24/7, a good work environment and comfortable living spaces are essential for attracting and retaining crew members, and for ensuring crew safety and safe operations.

Underwater noise

When designing the vessel, we looked at every aspect of the environments it would affect, from noise in ports close to residential areas, to the very important matter of underwater noise. Scientists say that noise from shipping is drowning out the healthy ocean soundscape, so we gave this matter our fullest attention when developing the Evolution project. Quiet propulsion, and low noise radiance from the hull form and machinery all do their part.

The vessel is equipped with:

• Spacious cabins
• Multiple social spaces
• Gym and sauna
• Enclosed deck trunk for safety and the environment
• Closed whale deck for minimizing swell in the mooring area
• Remotely operated hose crane for lower work load
• Ease of maintenance, all equipment
• Engine silencers

Efficient design

Estimated EEDI of 5.50 Required EEDI is 8.94. This is about 39% below 2025 requirements (Phase 3 = 2025).

Focus on vessel performance in real sea conditions. Vessel performance in real, year-round sea conditions in typical operating areas is of the utmost importance. Our focus was on developing hull and propulsion solutions optimised to fit the owner’s operating profile and trading area.

Attention was paid to:
Reduced speed loss due to resistance from waves without compromising calm weather performance.

Extending the point where a voluntary speed reduction is necessary to reduce rolling, avoid structural damage and shipping green water.

Low fuel consumption across the whole speed range by shaft generator combinator operation. Integrated rudder / propeller solution (Promas) for efficient propulsion and low underwater noise radiance.

Efficency measures:

  • Efficient hull shape
  • Highly efficient 2-stroke main engine
  • Discharging via 8 cargo pumps with zero emissions
  • Exceeds all current requirements
  • Wave piercing technology
  • Less speed loss in rough seas
  • Lower bow impact / less slamming

HYBRID ENERGY – Energy storage system (1)

Energy Storage System – HYBRID ENERGY

Spinning reserve:

The battery will continue to supply power to the system (1200 kW for 10 min) in case of generator failure. This should give plenty of time to start a standby generator (will be handled by the power management system (PMS)

Peak shaving (aka load levelling):

This function levels out the rapid fluctuations in the power delivered by the main engine and generators. As the electric load rises and falls, the battery charges and discharges, thus levelling the rapid load fluctuations experienced by the main engine and generator set(s).

Blackout recovery:

The ESS acts like an emergency standby generator in blackout situations. The battery is ready to supply power immediately for start-up of the generators.
ESS capacity: Abt 420 kWh / 1200 kW

Shore power

Shore Connection System – ZERO Emissions in port 6.6 kV / 1400 kVA shore connection for harbour operation / cargo handling

When shore power is connected, there are no generators running and zero emission conditions are achieved One aux engine is stand-by only The ESS (Energy Storage System) will act as black-out recovery.

Hybrid electric set-up

Zero emissions in port achieved by a combination of shore power and batteries. With this set-up, the vessel will give rise to no harmful emissions in port.
